Who are the Adeptus Custodes?
The Adeptus Custodes are not Space Marines. This is the first thing to understand. While Space Marines are produced in bulk — gene-seed implanted into recruits, a hundred at a time — each Custodian is individually crafted by the Emperor himself using processes so complex that no one else fully understands them.
A Space Marine takes years to make. A Custodian takes centuries. Where a Chapter fields a thousand warriors, the entire Custodes numbers around ten thousand — total, across all of history. They are not a military force in any conventional sense. They are a living weapon, each one the pinnacle of human potential.
They wear Auramite armor — not ceramite like the Space Marines — a more resilient alloy with a deep golden hue. They carry Guardian Spears: a long-handled powered weapon with a bolter built into the haft. In close combat, a single Custodian can tear through a squad of Space Marines without breaking stride.
For ten thousand years, most of them never left Terra. Their duty was singular: protect the Emperor, who sits dying-but-immortal on the Golden Throne, sustaining the Astronomican that allows faster-than-light travel across the Imperium. Since the return of Primarch Roboute Guilliman and the opening of the Great Rift, more Custodians venture out into the galaxy — but they go where they judge it necessary, answering to no one but the Emperor's own will.
How they play on the table
The Custodes play like nothing else in 40k. A typical army has 15–25 models total. Not a squad of 15 — the whole army. Every single model is worth 60–100+ points. You're not moving units; you're moving individuals.
Each Custodian is extraordinarily tough. Their armor saves most hits, they have a built-in Feel No Pain against mortal wounds, and they carry multiple wounds each. Getting a Custodian off an objective takes real work. But lose two or three in a bad turn and you may not recover.
Their signature mechanic is Martial Ka'tah — before each fight, you select a combat stance. Dacatarai gives your weapons Sustained Hits 1 (great against hordes). Rendax gives Lethal Hits (great against monsters and vehicles). Reading the game and choosing the right stance is a core decision you make constantly.
This is a high-skill-floor army. Every positioning decision matters. Every trade matters. A beginner who loses a squad loses models worth 60 points. A Custodes player who loses a bad engagement might lose 200 points in one turn. But when you're winning — when your Allarus Custodians deep strike onto an objective and tear through whatever was holding it — it feels like nothing else.

How to paint Adeptus Custodes
Gold is the challenge. But there's a fast route and a slow route — both look great at table distance.
The fast route (~20 min per model)
Spray with Retributor Armour
Citadel's gold spray. Covers the whole model in one pass. This is your base coat — everything else builds on this.
Wash with Reikland Fleshade
Apply over the whole model. Flows into the recesses of the armor and creates instant warmth and depth. The gold goes from flat to rich.
Drybrush with Liberator Gold
A light drybrush over the raised armor panels brings out the edges and restores brightness. Don't overdo it — you want the shaded areas to stay dark.
Paint the cloak/plume red
Khorne Red basecoat, Nuln Oil shade, Mephiston Red layer on raised areas. The red against gold is the classic Custodes look.
Silver for blades and weapons
Leadbelcher on weapon blades and gun barrels. Nuln Oil wash. Stormhost Silver edge highlight on blade edges. Done.
Base the model
Astrogranite Debris texture paint for a marble-esque palace floor look. Drybrush Administratum Grey. Add a tuft or two.
Contrast paint shortcut
Spray Wraithbone, then applyIyanden Yellow Contrast mixed withNazdreg Yellow Contrast over the armor. Then drybrush Stormhost Silver lightly for highlights. Not the classic gold look but striking — a warm burnished metal. Finish with red cloth and silver blades as above.
What to buy first
Start with the Combat Patrol. At 14 models, it's already a significant portion of a full army.
Combat Patrol: Adeptus Custodes
Includes a Blade Champion, 3 Allarus Custodians (the big terminators with halberds), 5 Custodian Guard, and 5 Custodian Wardens — 14 models total. For an elite army, this is actually close to a full list. The Allarus can deep strike behind enemy lines; the Guard hold objectives; the Wardens provide durable midfield presence.
