Aeldari

Once the masters of the galaxy. Now a dying race haunted by what they became. The Aeldari are fast, psychic, devastatingly precise β€” and every death is one they can never replace. The most tragic faction in 40k, and the one with the most beautiful models.

Who are the Aeldari?

Before humanity discovered fire, the Aeldari ruled the galaxy. Their civilization was ancient when the Milky Way was young β€” psychic beings of extraordinary intelligence and grace, whose empire touched every corner of known space. They built the Webway: a network of tunnels through sub-reality connecting their worlds, invisible and instantaneous. For millions of years, nothing threatened them.

That was their undoing.

Without struggle, the Aeldari turned inward. Their society fractured into decadence β€” pleasure cults, cruelty, obsession, excess. Their psychic nature meant that every emotion they felt resonated in the Warp. Across ten thousand years, their collective depravity built a presence in the immaterium β€” a vast, growing thing made of their worst impulses. Then, approximately ten thousand years ago, it was born.

Slaanesh β€” the Chaos God of excess, sensation, and pleasure β€” tore itself into existence in a psychic cataclysm that consumed the Aeldari empire in an instant. The Eye of Terror opened where their heart worlds once were. Billions died. Their civilization, built across millions of years, ended in a single screaming moment called the Fall.

The survivors were those already traveling the stars on massive city-ships calledCraftworlds β€” and those disciplined enough to have kept themselves separate from the corruption. Now there are perhaps millions of Aeldari left in a galaxy of trillions. They know their species is dying. Every death is irreplaceable. And Slaanesh still hungers for their souls β€” which is why every Aeldari wears a Spirit Stone to capture their consciousness at death, preserving it in the Wraithbone matrix of their Craftworld rather than letting it be consumed.

They fight because they have to. They win because they've had ten thousand years to practice, and they can't afford to lose.

Choose your Craftworld

Each surviving Craftworld has its own culture, colors, and battlefield doctrine. This is the most important aesthetic decision you'll make.

UlthwΓ©

Black & GoldPainting: Easy

The most powerful psyker Craftworld β€” UlthwΓ© sits near the Eye of Terror and has spent ten millennia fighting Chaos. Dark, brooding black armor with gold trim. One of the easiest schemes to execute and incredibly striking on the table.

Iyanden

Yellow & BluePainting: Hard

Devastated by Tyranids β€” most of Iyanden's population are dead, their spirits preserved in Wraith constructs that now make up the bulk of the army. Ghost warriors, wraithguard, wraithlords. Beautiful yellow and blue scheme but yellow is notoriously difficult to paint evenly.

Saim-Hann

Red & WhitePainting: Medium

Wild Riders β€” Saim-Hann is the cavalry Craftworld, famous for fast Jetbikes and aggressive hit-and-run tactics. Bold red with white and black detailing. Passionate, fierce, and completely ignoring the structured Path system.

Alaitoc

Blue & YellowPainting: Medium

Rangers and scouts β€” Alaitoc produces more Outcasts (Aeldari who walk away from the rigid Path system) than any other Craftworld. Many become Rangers, sniping from impossible distances. Blue and yellow scheme with a tactical, infiltration-focused playstyle.

Biel-Tan

Green & WhitePainting: Medium

The most aggressive Craftworld β€” Biel-Tan believes the Aeldari empire can be rebuilt and pursues that goal through war. Heavy on Aspect Warriors, especially Dire Avengers. Dark green armor with white and bone detailing.

Beginner recommendation: UlthwΓ©. Black + gold is fast, forgiving, and looks incredible. Avoid Iyanden until you're comfortable with yellow.

How they play on the table

Aeldari are an elite, mobile army. You will have fewer models than almost any opponent β€” but each one hits harder, moves faster, and does something specific extremely well. The army lives or dies by positioning and target priority.

The core of the army is Aspect Warriors β€” specialized warrior temples, each dedicated to one facet of war. Fire Dragons destroy vehicles and nothing else. Howling Banshees hit so fast enemies can't react to a charge. Dark Reapers stand back and delete units with precision artillery fire. You don't take generalists β€” you take specialists and deploy them against exactly the right target.

The Aeldari are also the most psychic faction. Multiple powerful Farseers and Warlocks provide crucial buffs, debuffs, and damage that other armies simply don't have access to.

The honest caveat: this is a high skill floor army. Because your models are fragile (individually expensive in points, often with poor armor saves), mistakes are punishing. A misdeployed squad of Howling Banshees that gets shot before they can charge is ten models gone β€” and ten models you genuinely feel. This isn't the right first faction if you're still learning the core rules. But if you have some games under your belt, the ceiling is tremendous.

Aeldari are for you if...

  • βœ“ You want the most beautiful models in the game
  • βœ“ You love the tragic, ancient civilization lore
  • βœ“ You want a high-skill, high-reward army to master
  • βœ“ You want strong psychic abilities
  • βœ“ You want speed and precision over brute force

Maybe look elsewhere if...

  • βœ— You're still learning the game β€” mistakes are expensive
  • βœ— You want a horde or lots of bodies
  • βœ— You want a simple, forgiving playstyle
  • βœ— You want the grimdark human-scale story

How to paint Aeldari

Using UlthwΓ© (black + gold) β€” the most beginner-friendly Craftworld.

Aeldari armor is curved and elegant β€” the opposite of the angular slabs you see on Space Marines. This means contrast paints and drybrushing work differently here. The curved surfaces reward a careful edge highlight, but even a simple wash and drybrush looks good. UlthwΓ© forgives a lot β€” dark colors hide imperfections.

1

Spray Abaddon Black

Black primer over the whole model. UlthwΓ©'s dark armor is your base. Make sure you get full coverage β€” gaps in black primer show badly on dark models.

2

Drybrush Mechanicus Standard Grey on armor panels

A medium grey drybrush catches all the raised curves and edges of the armor, creating instant highlight without touching a fine brush to every edge.

3

Retributor Armour on all gold trim

Helmet crests, shoulder pad rims, chest gems, weapon casings. The gold contrast against dark armor is the signature UlthwΓ© look β€” take your time here, it's worth it.

4

Reikland Fleshshade over the gold

A brown-gold wash that flows into the recesses of the trim and enriches the gold tone. Takes it from flat metallic paint to genuine antique gold.

5

Spirit stone gems β€” Tesseract Glow or Waystone Green

Every Aeldari model has spirit stones β€” small gems on the chest or helmet. A dab of Tesseract Glow (green OSL technical paint) in the recess creates a glowing gem effect instantly. This detail transforms the model.

6

Nuln Oil in recesses, base the model

A thin Nuln Oil wash into the deepest recesses of the armor panels adds the final depth. Base with a dark stone texture paint and a sparse tuft β€” sparse because Aeldari feel ancient, not overgrown.

The edge highlight upgrade

The drybrushed grey gets you 80% of the way. The last 20% β€” and what makes Aeldari look truly spectacular β€” is a thin edge highlight of Administratum Grey along the sharpest armor curves. This requires a fine detail brush and a steady hand, but it's not as hard as it looks. Practice on one model first, then decide if you want to do it on the whole army. The result is worth it.
