Now what?
Warhammer 40k is incredible — and genuinely hard to get into. The official materials don't help much. This guide does. We'll take you from curious to confidently playing, step by step.

What even is this?
Warhammer 40,000 is a tabletop miniature war game set in a dark sci-fi universe 38,000 years in the future. You build an army of plastic (or resin) miniatures, paint them, and battle against other players on a tabletop battlefield.
But honestly? A lot of people get into it mostly for the hobby — collecting, building, and painting the models. The game itself is the payoff after all that work. Both things are real, and both are worth it.
The catch: the barrier to entry is steep. There are dozens of factions, hundreds of unit types, layers of rules, and a genuine learning curve to painting. Most resources assume you already know someone who plays. This guide assumes you don't.
The path in
Every guide on this site covers one of these steps.
Find Your Army
The biggest decision — and the one that costs real money if you get it wrong. Take the quiz and we'll match you to a faction that fits how you want to play and paint.
Know Your Faction
Deep dives on every major faction — lore, playstyle, how hard they are to paint, what to buy first, and honest cost estimates.
Build Your Models
How to cut, trim, and assemble without destroying your models — including how to actually read GW's notoriously confusing instructions.
Paint Your Army
What paints and tools you actually need. The slapchop technique for getting an army done fast. Step by step, no art degree required.
Base Your Models
The step most guides skip. A good base turns a painted miniature into a scene. Texture paints, tufts, static grass — easier than it looks.
Play the Game
How a game of 40k actually works. Turns, objectives, dice, what your first game looks like — without drowning you in the full rulebook.
